The Clash Of Two Cultures essays
The Clash Of Two Cultures essays In the early 1600's, different cultures came to "The New World", in search of many different things, freedom of religion, to look for the Indies,in search of treasure and many more. When these "white men" came to the America's change for the Native Americans did not happen all at once, but over time the traditional way of everyday life changed for the Native Americans.Wonder, and curiosity rather than bitterness were some of the first expressions when these different cultures came into first contact. The great barriers of religion, ethics, language and values are some of the biggest factors that divided the Indians and Explorers from eachother. According to the puritan's beliefs, God has already chose which people will have salvation. Native American's however, believe that everyone is the same and that no single person is better than another. The belief's of these two groups were also carried out differently, the Puritan's relied on their bible, and the Native americans relied on oral transmission of their theolgy. The Native Americans worshipped their own "great spirit", that took refrence for all living and once living things. The Puritan's however hold their bible literal and sacred, they saw the worship of other living things or than God as sinly, and therefore held the Native American society as a society drowning in sin. Moral And ethical values also differed greatly between the two societys, explorers didn't understand the barbaric ways of the Indians, and the Indian's didn't understand why the explorers viewed their lack of clothing, and organized worship as "savage". Language, a huge barrier always made it hard for the society's to communicate with eachother. Soon, the "invaders" found a way to somewhat communicate with Native American sign language, but this did not always mean they understood eachother. No matter how hard these two cultures tried there was always the language barrier holdin ...

Bullying in Schools Causes, Effects and Possible Solutions Assignment
Bullying in Schools Causes, Effects and Possible Solutions - Assignment Example It is reported that around 14% of the victims of bullying report poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts as a result of bullying. In addition, there is the stunning revelation that most of the bullying occurs on school grounds (Olweus, 2013). Scholars have identified so many reasons behind bullying and none of these reasons exhibits considerable supremacy. The first cause as identified by people like Rigby (2007) is the family background of the bullies. It is found that the students who belong to families which are dysfunctional have three times more chance to be a bully at school. In addition is the finding that when the children belong to families where there is good parent-child relationship, the chance of becoming a bully is considerably reduced. Moreover, people like Olweus (2013) have observed a link between media and bullying. The children who watch violence in the media for long hours are more likely to exhibit violent behavior and aggression at school. It seems that when children watch violence in media, they fail to learn the socially acceptable ways of behavior and start dealing with day-to-day life in the way they watch in media. In other words, children learn what they observe, and when there is a lot of violence in media, children fail to distinguish between fiction and reality and resort to violence in real life. In the opinion of Olweus (2013), some students are more likely to be bullies because of certain individual characteristics. To illustrate, the ones who are bullies generally have above average physical strength. In addition, they are more aggressive in their behavior and exhibit little compassion towards the sufferings of others. Thus, Olweus (2013) reaches the conclusion that bullying behavior is considerably linked to individual traits. Thus, as the bullies share certain similarities in their physical and psychological makeup, the victims of bullying too exhibit certain common characteristics. For

Improving Time Management Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Improving Time Management - Research Paper Example One of the first steps in trying to solve this problem was to determine what kind of information I needed to gather in order to solve the problem.à Some things were very concrete, such as my class and work schedule.à You could say my dinner schedule was pretty concrete, too, except my dad would make exceptions to the rule if I just talked with him ahead of time.à Other things, such as how much time I would need for homework, were flexible by someone elseââ¬â¢s standards.à In other words, it depended on my instructors to determine how much homework they were going to hand out each night and when we were going to have tested.à However, the syllabi that they handed out at the beginning of the term could give me an average amount of time per week that I would need for homework.à Even less predictable was the schedule I worked out with my friends when I would see them, what we would do and how long we would hang out.à This would be the hardest bit of information to figure out.à Finally, there were the things that I had to do, like laundry and sleep, that was necessary for my welfare but that I usually forgot to plan.à These kinds of things could just be listed out and approximate times are given, such as I know I like to have 8 hours of sleep at night and I know it usually takes me about 4 hours to get my laundry done when I finally get around to doing it. Once all this information is gathered together, it is necessary to evaluate it and bring it into some form of organization. à With my class schedule and work schedule in front of me, I can chart out the days and times each week that I have to be in each place. To do this, I will make a big chart with a single row of seven squares, one for each day of the week. I will write my class times and my work times down, leaving space any time there are gaps where I donââ¬â¢t have to go to work straight from school. I will pencil in family dinners on every day that work and school donâ⠬â¢t get in the way. Using the syllabi from my classes, I will attempt to determine just how much time each day I will need to finish my homework and then try to find time in this schedule for study. I know things like sleeping and laundry take a set amount of time, so I will also pencil these in because they are flexible ââ¬â I can sleep a little less if I need to and I can do the laundry on another day if necessary. The time left in each day will be the time I have available to spend with my friends, since this is both the hardest to pin down and the least important of my activities toward my future success. By using this chart, I will be able to take better control of my life and make sure that I get everything done that needs to be done. I did run into some problems in trying to apply my ideas, such as when

Is There Life Off Earth Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Is There Life Off Earth - Term Paper Example But even it is taken for granted that on some planets in this universe, there prevails an environment like the one on the earth, one cannot be sure of the existence of life on those planet. This paper will devise an experiment to test whether any form of life as defined on Earth could prosper on Mars. This experiment will be conveyed mainly by the theoretical assessment of the possibility of life on Mars. Traditional search for life on Mars as well as in the universe is centered on the quest whether Mars can provide essential conditions of life. These conditions are to be the same as they are required for the survival of life on Earth. In order to life to exist on Mars, scientists suggest that the planet must have water. But the temperature of the planet must not be high enough to evaporate the water. Therefore, liquidity of water must be preserved in order to initiate the existence of life (Stewart 39). This opinion of the scientists is greatly influenced by the hydro-evolutionary theory that asserts that life on Earth has been initiated from the movement of water in the ocean. Also in order to sustain life, Mars must have the availability of elements like carbon and nitrogen, so that the unary organic system like cells can grow easily. At the same time, the planet should have an apparently congenial environment that can sustain life as well as preserve each its evolutionary steps. The question whether Mars can provide the conditions of life is totally based on empirical science. With a highest -600 C temperature that is slightly higher that the lowest -800 C temperature of the Antarctic region, the environment of Mars is supposed to be hostile for most of the microorganism organisms as well as other forms of earthly life. Also having a gravitational force, 38 percent of that of Earth, it has a thin layer atmosphere, .7% of Earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere. Even though there are other dissimilarities,

Synesthesia :: Biology Medical Medicine Research
In the mornings, my cat often takes up a post on my chest. His presence is heralded by a chirpy meow and four quarter-sized points of pressure where his feet make contact; as he relaxes, he settles into a loud, rhythmic purr, and the pressure of his 16 pounds is more evenly distributed across my ventral torso. If I'm slow to open my eyes, he reaches out a paw and gently pricks my face with his claws â⬠¹ enough to make an impression but not do real damage. When I do open my eyes, I see the triangles of his ears, the dense, velvety blackness of his fur and the sheen of his nose; his yellow irises are thin rings around his dilated pupils in the dim, early light. Suppose I experienced all of those sensations up to the point of opening my eyes â⬠¹ the pressure of my cat's weight and the pricks of his claws, his meowing and his purr â⬠¹ and then I opened my eyes to the absence of any visual evidence of a cat. I'd be confused and disoriented, and if the tactile and auditory stimuli continued, probably panicky. A fundamental reworking of how I understand the world would be necessary to account for an invisible cat. Now suppose that the next time I heard guitar music, I failed to perceive a soft brushing sensation around my ankles. It would not bother me a bit. But for Carol Crane, a guitar that didn't affect her ankles might provoke the same sort of confusion and anxiety an invisible cat would induce in me. To Crane, the ankle-brushing sensation has always been an integral part of guitar music, just as violins always act upon her face and trumpets on the back of her neck. Crane has a rare condition called synesthesia, in which a stimulus usually perceived in one sensory modality produces a sensation in one or more other sensory modalities. (1). Synesthesia has many forms â⬠¹ synesthetes may taste shapes or feel odors, for instance, or perceive alphanumeric characters in particular colors. Synesthetic perceptions are involuntary and are reliably triggered by the phenomena that induce them. They are also consistent over time for a given synesthete; that is, a true synesthete for whom the musical note E produces a percept of red triangles on a field of yellow will invariably experience that sound that way.

Fast food persuasive essay Essay
Imagine a world full of fast food restaurants. No more needs for salad, just hamburgers and fries. We arenââ¬â¢t at this point but we are going there with the fact that the amount of fast food restaurants went up with 300% the past few years. The amount of obese children has gone up, unlike their life span which is going down with every visit to the McDonaldââ¬â¢s or the Burger King. Kids arenââ¬â¢t realizing what they are eating, and what they should be eating. I donââ¬â¢t blame them, with the amount of advertisements and restaurants, itââ¬â¢s hard to resist. One of the main reasons this is happening is because kids & teens donââ¬â¢t know what they are eating. As they put that burger to there mouth they tell themselves;â⬠Thereââ¬â¢s tomato and lettuce in here, itââ¬â¢s not that badâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . They are missing the trans fat filled sauces and the oil fried hamburger. These kinds of foods have no vitamins and lack of nutrition. We donââ¬â¢t know the science behind these foods, what they put in them or how they make them. Thereââ¬â¢s been a tremendous amount of controversy over McDonaldââ¬â¢s burgers since celebrity chef Jamie Oliver demonstrated how meat scraps and sinew are spun in a centrifuge and ââ¬Å"washedâ⬠with ammonium hydroxide, which has also become known as â⬠HYPERLINK ââ¬Å"http://www.care2.com/greenliving/pink-slime-now-just-an-option-for-schools.htmlâ⬠ââ¬Å"_blankâ⬠Pink Slime.ââ¬Å" This chemical is used in fertilizers and cleaning products. According to Oliver it is used in 70 percentages of ground beef in the United States but does not require inclusion on ingredient lists because the US Department of Agriculture classifies it as a ââ¬Å"processâ⬠not an ââ¬Å"ingredientâ⬠even though residues of this process are left behind in the meat consumed. He says, â⬠Basically, weââ¬Ëre taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest way for dogs, and after this process, is being given to human beings.â⬠Thanks to the amount of fa st food restaurants there has bin a growth of fast food consumers has gone up with larger numbers than ever before. More restaurants are selling and more people are buying. This year, there were 160,0000 fast food restaurants counted in America. This is 10,0000 more than last year.
